HPLAN2MS WHITE PAPER - UPGRADING FROM HP LAN MANAGER FOR OS/2 AND MS/DOS VERSION 1.X TO MICROSOFT LAN MANAGER 2.1 October 1991 Hewlett-Packard OVERVIEW This paper describes the process and products available to migrate current customers of HP LAN Manager for OS/2 and MS/DOS Version 1.0 or 1.1 (hereafter HP LAN Manager 1.X) to Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1. The upgrade will be available from Microsoft for HP's customers. Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 will include a TCP/IP transport developed by HP for Microsoft. Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 will be able to replace HP LAN Manager 1.X as an OS/2 based LAN Manager server in an HP systems environment. Topics covered in this paper are: 1) Who can use the upgrade 2) Upgrade Ordering Information 3) Descriptions of the upgrade products 4) Integration with HP systems/servers 5) Support Services and Technical Reference WHO CAN USE THE UPGRADE This upgrade program is for HP customers who currently own one of the following: D1809A HP LAN Manager 1.0 Five User License D1809B HP LAN Manager 1.1 Five User License D1810A HP LAN Manager 1.0 Unlimited User License D1810B HP LAN Manager 1.1 Unlimited User License The upgrade will migrate customers from an HP LAN Manager Unlimited or Five User License server to a Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 Unlimited License server. HP's Support Subscription Service does not apply to this upgrade program. The upgrade from HP LAN Manager 1.X to Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 will be sold by Microsoft Authorized Network Specialists. The following are acceptable proof of product ownership: Title page of main HP LAN Manager for OS/2 and MS/DOS Version 1.X server installation manual Dated sales receipts HP support contract that lists the supported server(s) DESCRIPTIONS OF THE UPGRADE PRODUCTS The upgrade, known as the Global Update LAN Program, upgrades either HP LAN Manager 1.X or 3Com 3+Open customers to Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 This package includes the following: Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1, including TCP/IP transport, unlimited user license OS/2 version 1.31 Information about migrating specifically for the HP LAN Manager 1.X customer A Toolkit for migrating HP LAN Manager 1.0 or 3Com 3+Open networks to Microsoft 2.1 LAN Manager Features and Benefits of Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 -------------------------------------------------- * Enhanced Security. Each network resource can be controlled (directories, subdirectories, individual files, print queues and peripherals), and each user access after initial logon is transparently checked for access rights. Passwords are government DES encrypted; account control lets you specify valid logon times, valid workstations, and account expiration dates as well as password length and age; secure shell and local security controls protect network resources against unauthorized access; network auditing selectively tracks network resource use. * Advanced multiserver administration tools: Domains enable you to administer multiple servers as one unit. Groups allow you to set privileges across multiple resources for multiple users in one step. Replicator server automatically duplicates changes made to designated files to other designated servers or OS/2 workstations. * Transports: NetBEUI, DLC and TCP/IP. The TCP/IP transport is included for access between Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 clients and servers. This transport will also provide the networking foundation for LAN Manager 2.1 clients to access HP systems and other HP LAN Manager servers. See section 4, "Integration with HP Systems/Servers". * Fault tolerance: Uninterruptable power supply (UPS) support Disk mirroring (pairs a hard driver with a duplicated backup for data protection if one fails). Disk duplexing (includes backup controllers for mirrored disk drives). * Peer Services. Any OS/2 workstation can function as a limited server and can be used to share printers or files. * DOS LAN Manager client installation over the network. * Multiprocessor support Toolkit Description: -------------------- As part of the upgrade, Microsoft provides a toolkit with XNS, DLC and NBP transports to allow HP LAN Manager 1.0 or 3Com 3+Open customers to run a mixed environment of LAN Manager 1.X server and clients and Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 servers and clients. However, to ensure complete compatibility between clients and LAN Manager 2.1 servers, HP recommends reinstalling client and server software with LAN Manager 2.1. In addition, HP recommends using one of the standard transports (TCP/IP, NetBEUI, or DLC) included with Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1. The use of the toolkit transports is not recommended. For customers who do choose to mix HP LAN Manager 1.X servers and clients with Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 servers and clients, the toolkit provides the following: XNS version 1.2 transport for the Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 server and clients. Information on obtaining the NBP transport for the Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 server from Compuserve. PrEditor (Protocol Editor Script), for installing protocols Home Directory Utility Kit installer and documentation Information specifically for HP LAN Manager 1.X customers --------------------------------------------------------- A separate packet contains information for HP LAN Manager 1.X customers on the following subjects: Access to HP 3000 and HP 9000 systems using HP Network Services/MS-DOS 2.X or HP ARPA Services/MS-DOS 2.X Interoperability with other HP LAN Manager servers Interoperability with HP Resource Sharing INTEGRATION WITH HP SYSTEMS AND SERVERS Client Services products: ------------------------- As of October 1991 HP Network Services/MS-DOS 2.1 and HP ARPA Services/MS-DOS 2.1 do not support the Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 client, but support of this client is planned for May of 1992 in version B.03.00 of each of these products. Some of the applications which use Sockets or NetIPC included in NS 2.1 or ARPA 2.1 include: NewWave Mail, AdvanceMail, NewWave Access and Information Access. LAN Manager/X server access: ---------------------------- With the TCP/IP transport, Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 clients will be able to access HP LAN Manager/X servers. However, changes in the LAN Manager 2.1 client will require modification of HP LAN Manager/X in order to avoid some minor incompatibilities with the LM 2.1 client. These modifications to HP LAN Manager/X are planned for first quarter 1992. This new version of HP LAN Manager/X will be available in subsequent new shipments, and upgrades will be available via the HP Support Subscription Service. Access to Resource Sharing on HP 3000 systems --------------------------------------------- For Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 DOS clients to access HP 3000 Resource Sharing servers, the Probe module of TCP/IP is required on the client PC. Probe is not included in the TCP/IP transport delivered in Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1. It will be available as part of HP Network Services/MS-DOS 2.1 version B.03.00 which customers will need to purchase for Resource Sharing Access. TECHNICAL REFERENCE AND SUPPORT SERVICES Supported network interface cards: ---------------------------------- Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 supports those network interface cards which have NDIS compatible drivers. The HP network interface cards currently with NDIS support are: HP EtherTwist Adapter Cards - 27245A, 27247A, 27267A HP EtherTwist MicroChannel Adapter Card 27246A HP StarLAN 10 PC Card II 27240A HP StarLAN 10 MicroChannel Card 27241A HP StarLAN 10 Vectra PC Adapter Card 27236A HP ThinLAN/Vectra PC Adapter Card 27210A 27210B HP ThinLAN Adapter Card 27250A Support for Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1: -------------------------------------- In the U.S., HP's Multivendor Support Organization will be providing support for Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1.
